It has been a painful year for Saab owners. Saab has all but come to an end. The parent company, Saab Automobile, filed for bankruptcy mid December. After several failed attempts of selling the company to several Chinese auto companies, Saab began the steps to close the doors. 2,200 new Saabs are still for sale at dealerships at steep discounts and currently with no warranty, parts remain available through dealerships and other sources.

According to an article from Automotive News, January 9th by Rick Kranz:
“Saab has asked dealers to give its U.S. operations time to work out financial issues and not file a Chapter 7 involuntary bankruptcy petition.”
“We expect Saab to be 100 percent forthcoming,” said Leonard Bellavia, a lawyer who represents 145 of Saab’s 188 U.S. dealerships. “If we are comfortable and if we can get certain guarantees put into place, then we could avoid a bankruptcy.”

“Saab dealers want:

  • Preference over creditors for outstanding receivables. Bellavia estimates Saab Cars North America owes $10,000 to $200,000 per dealership for incentives and warranties. Dealers have not been paid for warranty work and incentives since Saab Cars North America suspended operations.
  • Reimbursement for any losses incurred in selling each new vehicle.
  • Proceeds from any vehicle sold by Saab Cars North America to be placed in a U.S. escrow account and not be transferred to Saab Automobile.
  • Vehicles stored at U.S. ports and in dealer inventories to be sold with a warranty paid by Saab Cars North America.”

Comments from Jim McTevia, managing member of McTevia & Associates which has been selected to handle day to day operations of Saab Cars North America after the bankruptcy filing point to trying to keep Saab Cars North America together, “cohesive until the people who are kind of kicking the tires decide what they are going to do. We are trying to hold things status quo until all options are exhausted.”

Negotiating the parts shipment/ distribution is crucial. “This is going to give the company the ability to continue for a longer period of time. Had we not been able to negotiate the mechanism to start distribution parts, there would be nothing for the company to do.” “It is conceivable there could be a parts operation that survives this, but that is all being scoped out right now.”

There is still hope that the Saab will be bought in its entirety but that is looking less and less likely as the weeks go on. It has become apparent that GM is unwilling to sell the licensing agreements that its own of Saab. With luck a deal will be struck and the Saab will be saved….we hope.
